Law Day Luncheon
Law Day 2008 - 50th Anniversary

The Midland County Bar Association (MCBA) and the Midland County Young Lawyers Association (MCYLA) held their Annual Law Day Luncheon on May 1, 2006, at the Midland Petroleum Club, Midland, Texas. Law Day was created by President Eisenhower in 1958 to foster public understanding and appreciation of the rule of law and the American justice system.
The keynote speaker was Justice Phil Johnson of the Texas Supreme Court. The theme this year was The Rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity.

2008 Winners
Abigail McCrary, a junior at Midland High School, won First Place. Read the winning essay.
Robbie Canon, a junior at Trinity High School, won Second Place. Read the winning essay.
Annie Lewis, a junior at Odessa High School, won Third Place. Read the winning essay.
Tenai Rheinlander, a sophmore at Midland High School, received an Honorable Mention. Read the winning essay.
Mayor Canon proclaimed May 4, 2006 as Law Day in Midland, Texas. A local lawyer, Pat Long Weaver, gave the invocation. More than sixty people attended Law Day in Midland, including the Honorable Robert A. Junell, Honorable Jody Gilles, Honorable Dean Rucker, Honorable Michael Wallace, and Honorable Mike Canon as well as several local public officials.

Law Day 2006
The Midland County Bar Association (MCBA) and the Midland County Young Lawyers Association (MCYLA) held their Annual Law Day Luncheon on May 4, 2006, at the Midland Center, Midland, Texas. Law Day was created by President Eisenhower in 1958 to foster public understanding and appreciation of the rule of law and the American justice system.
The keynote speaker was Professor Vickie Sutton, Chief Counsel for the Research and Innovative Technology Administration at the United States Department of Transportation. Professor Sutton, who is on leave from Texas Tech University School of Law, gave an address highlighting the 2006 Law Day theme, Liberty Under Law: Separate Branches, Balanced Powers. Professor Sutton highlighted the three branches of government, their history and powers, the limits on those powers, and explained several United States Supreme Court decisions that dealt with the dynamic tension between the three branches of government and the separation of powers doctrine.
